Composer’s Notes

The Suite of Vintage Dances was composed for the Minnesota-based professional brass septet, Ameriikan Poijat in honor of their thirtieth anniversary season. The work is scored for a Finnish style brass band: E-flat Cornet, two B-flat Cornets, Alto Horn, Tenor Horn, Euphonium and Tuba. The premiere was originally to have occurred during the Vintage Band Festival in Northfield, Minnesota in the summer of 2021, but was delayed until November.

The suite consists of six movements based on traditional dance forms, and my intent was for the music to discover modern and unique elaborations on the basic rhythmic and other stylistic qualities of each dance.

The creation of this composition was supported through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC). SEMAC activities are made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
