Composer’s Notes
I was commissioned to compose this work for the 10th anniversary of the Hermantown Youth Choirs/Lake Superior Youth Chorus. I conducted the premiere which took place in May 2003 in Duluth, MN, with the combined unison, treble and SATB choruses of LSYC. The primary text for this extended work is a wonderful poem by Maya Angelou by the same title. Also embedded in the piece are two spirituals, Woke Up this Mornin’ and Freedom Train’s A Comin’.
