Composer’s Notes
In 1991, Merilee Klemp, oboist, and Chris Kachian, guitarist, commissioned this three-movement suite. They have performed the work several times, including in recital at the International Double Reed Society Convention in 1993. Merilee also performed the pieces with guitarist Jeffrey Van at the concert honoring my teacher, Dominick Argento, upon his retirement from the University of Minnesota in November 1997. Merilee and Chris included Ballad, Rag and Cakewalk on the programs for their fall tour 1999, including a performance at the Church of the Holy Trinity in New York City. They have recorded the work on their 2002 CD entitled Falls Flyer, a production of the Schubert Club of St. Paul, MN. The work is fairly challenging to play (particularly for the guitarist) but is immediately accessible to the listener.
