Composer’s Notes

This medley allows you to combine adult and youth choirs for a big Palm Sunday opening which is effective and easy to put together. The spiritual “Ride On, King Jesus” begins the medley in a powerful unison which then breaks into a two-part canon. My own setting of the text “Blest be the one who comes in the name of the Lord,” sung by either SA youth choir, solo voices, or the women of the adult choir, provides a graceful contrasting middle section. The spiritual then returns majestically, this time abridged, leading to a subdued ending as a foreshadowing of Christ’s passion.
