Composer’s Notes

This medley of carols was commissioned for the combined chorus and orchestra of Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minnesota. It was premiered in December of 1994. The familiar carols are “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” “What Child Is This?” (also available separately with winds accompaniment), and “Go Tell It On The Mountain.” The final carol is set in gospel-rock style. The exact instrumentation is 2222, 4331, timpani, percussion (2 players), strings, handbells (5 octaves) or keyboard, saxophones (optional: 2 alto, tenor and baritone, but covered in other parts), electric bass and piano (gospel style). The orchestration is not difficult and is definitely playable by an average college orchestra and even good high school ensembles. Doc Severinsen has conducted several performances of this with the Minnesota Orchestra and Milwaukee Symphony.
