Composer’s Notes
The original chamber version of this work was commissioned in 2003 by a consortium of ten Minnesota high schools and is a continuous medley of three American folk tunes: The Girl I Left Behind Me, She’s Gone Away and Ol’ Dan Tucker. I was asked to rescore the work for full winds and was fortunate to assemble another consortium of high school and college ensembles to support the project in 2012. Since publication in the Windependence Series (Boosey & Hawkes), the chamber version has become quite popular and is on many repertoire lists.
