Composer’s Notes
This is my most pop/rock-influenced work for wind ensemble, and, as I explained to the audience, it is probably a result of that momentous day in my life as a twelve year old when I received my first transistor radio. No longer was I forced to listen to the radio stations that my parents would choose at home or in the car. The exciting world of commercial pop and rock music was literally at my fingertip, and I immersed myself in it throughout my teens. Somehow, forty-five years later, many of the syncopated rhythms and other musical devices of that genre had a strong influence on this composition. Before the premiere, with the help of the band, I introduced some of these elements to the audience by isolating a few spots which the ensemble played for them.
The work is not demanding technically, and the ranges are standard, while rhythm and articulation are the main focus. There is an optional percussion jam at the end which may also involve other band members and even your audience.
