Composer’s Notes

This is the middle movement of Trinity Canticles, a three-movement work I wrote in 1989 for the Bloomington (MN) Symphony Orchestra. It is often used as a separate composition and has become the most performed orchestral work I have written. It has been used several times to open the popular St. Olaf Christmas Festival at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. It is a serene work featuring mainly slow, sustained strings at the beginning and the end. In the middle section, the winds are given quotations of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” and “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded”, calling attention to the central events in the life of Christ.
