Composer’s Notes

This is the third in a set of four musical settings of wonderful texts by Arnold Lobel from his book Whiskers and Rhymes.

“Friendly Fredrick Fuddlestone” is a rollicking hoedown for 2-part children’s chorus, piano and fiddle. It has been a bestseller since being published. The singers even get to do some foot-stompin’ and hand clappin’ at the end.

I was commissioned to write this set for the 1996-97 ACDA Minnesota Elementary Honors Choir, and they have since been published as separate octavos by Shawnee Press/Mark Foster Music. See “Four from ‘Whiskers and Rhymes'” for information about the entire set.
