Composer’s Notes
This was a 2017 commission from my congregation in Northfield, Minnesota, to honor our retiring music director, Rhonda Reece. Upon receiving the commission, I asked Rhonda some of her favorite hymns. The first two she mentioned were “Love Divine,” and “Let All Things Now Living” (ASH GROVE). I told her I was setting the first hymn, but surprised her and the congregation with short interrupting quotes of the latter in the children’s voices on a playful “la la la.” My inspiration for doing so was the well-known fact that in her twenty-two years of ministry Rhonda could often be heard humming snippets of hymns as she walked the halls of Bethel Lutheran Church. A companion piece for solo keyboard, “Prelude on Hyfrydol,” contains some of the music from the choral setting but also goes off into new territory.
