In 1997, the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies celebrated their 25th anniversary. They commissioned nine composers to write for each of their nine ensembles. I was asked to write for the youngest group, the Little Philharmonia, who premiered Twilight Plunge in May 1997 under the baton of Susan Oftedahl. I wrote the piece with the following in mind (as stated in the program notes): "As you are listening to Twilight Plunge, imagine the feelings you might experience while scuba diving at dusk in the warm clear waters just off shore from one of the Caribbean Islands. Surrounded by water which is only dimly lit by the receding rays of the sun, true silence envelops you. This pleasant solitude mingles with the peaceful mystery of the unknown as objects become more visible as you approach them or as they approach you and then fade into the background behind you." The composition is orchestrated for flute, oboe, 2 clarinets (B-flat), horn, 2 trumpets (B-flat), trombone, tuba, percussion (one or two players) and strings.
