This work was commissioned in 2015 for the Chamber Singers and Concert Chorus of the Frederick (Maryland) Children's Chorus, Judy DuBose, Founder and Artistic Director, in honor of their thirtieth anniversary season. The well-known text was written by Indian poet Kalidasa who lived in the 4th-5th centuries C.E.:
Look to this day:
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your being:
The bliss of growth,
The glory of action,
The splendor of accomplishment
Are but the benefits of time.
For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow just a vision;
And today well-lived, makes
Every yesterday a dream of joy
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well therefore to this day;
Such is the greeting to the ever-new dawn!
